The Thompson Center – Presentation

Completed in 1985, the James R. Thompson Center was hailed at its grand opening as “A Building for the Year 2000”. Forty years later, known simply as Thompson Center, the building will be repositioned as the Chicago office of Google. Grounded in Jahn’s longstanding commitment to high-performance design and Google’s pursuit of a more sustainable workplace, Philip Castillo FAIA will discuss the development of the Thompson Center’s new high-performance façade. The presentation will explore how the triple-glazed enclosure maximizes visible light while reducing solar heat gain, addressing transparency, reflectance, and bird-safety performance. Integral to the design is the integration of a glass screen at the protected landscaped terraces, demonstrating how modern design interventions can respect the building’s iconic form while reinforcing its dynamic presence within the downtown Chicago urban fabric.
