Phase 3 Chicago Construction Code Modernization Initiative – A Presentation by Chicago Department of Buildings
Presented by Grant Ullrich
We’re joined this month by Grant Ullrich, Managing Deputy Commissioner at the Chicago Department of Buildings, presenting Phase 3 of the Chicago Construction Codes Modernization Initiative — a comprehensive package of code amendments advancing Mayor Johnson’s Cut the Tape initiative and this administration’s commitment to building the safest, most affordable city in America. Phase 3 updates five code areas — mechanical, fuel gas, fire prevention, energy, and residential construction — to meet the unique needs of Chicago’s housing stock and built environment while aligning the city’s requirements with the latest national consensus standards. It reflects a simple principle: in Chicago, affordability and safety are complementary goals, not competing priorities.
Grant Ullrich, Assoc. AIA, is Managing Deputy Commissioner of the City of Chicago Department of Buildings with responsibility for code development, policy, and administration. Grant is a licensed attorney and holds professional degrees in law and architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the Department of Buildings in 2016, he worked in the City’s Law Department handling a wide variety of matters including code enforcement, legislative drafting, and constitutional litigation.
