St. James Cathedral Tour

St. James Cathedral was rebuilt in 1875 after the Great Chicago Fire and is the Seat of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago. The organ replacement project involves the removal of the existing organ and replacement with a 1958 J. W. Walker & Sons organ that was removed from the London City Temple and refurbished by Buzard Organ Company in Champaign, IL. The organ features 3 manuals, 5 divisions, 72 stops, and 60 ranks comprising 3,588 pipes; the total weight is around 58,800 lbs. The project involves the investigation and reinforcement of the Organ Loft to support the new organ and widening of the adjacent exit corridor to accommodate caskets from funerals.

The committee meeting will start at the usual time 5:00 pm in the Cathedral’s Modern Wing for a presentation followed by a tour of the Cathedral’s Organ Loft. Drinks and appetizers will follow at a nearby TBD location.
