SUMMARY:2023 April In-Person Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Designing the World’s Tallest Residential Building\nPresented by: Thomas Schneider\nAdrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architects \nLocated on Manhattan’s Billionaire’s Row and steps from Central Park\, Central Park Tower is a landmark supertall tower designed to be a powerful and poised statement worthy of the Manhattan skyline. With a height of 1\,550 feet\, Central Park Tower is the tallest Residential Building in the world. At this height\, the tower provides its residents with one-of-a-kind panoramas of Central Park and Manhattan. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from the design architects about its process from concept to completion as we touch on the key elements of its core and shell. \nAbout the Presenter \nThomas Schneider is a Senior Designer at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architects. After graduating from North Dakota State University with a Master of Architecture\, he began his career working on Jeddah Tower\, the next world’s tallest building. Since then\, Thomas has had ten years of experience designing landmark projects of all scales around the world. \nThis will be a face-to-face meeting and we will be meeting at: \nHarry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse\n33 West Kinzie\nChicago\, IL\n312.828.0966 \nAs in the past we will meet in the upstairs Wrigley Room.

SUMMARY:2023 March In-Person Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Successfully Implementing Acoustic Design Strategies\nPresented by: David G. Paoli\, P.E.\nShiner Acoustics\, LLC \nAcoustical performance of wall and floor ceiling assemblies is not only reliant on a good acoustical design\, but also making sure that design is properly implemented from the specification of materials to the correct installation of these assemblies. This program will discuss some basic acoustical terms\, products\, variables in acoustic design and improper field conditions that will affect the acoustical performance. This program will focus on partitions and floor/ceiling assembly construction. \nThis will be a face-to-face meeting and we will be meeting at: \nHarry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse\n33 West Kinzie\nChicago\, IL\n312.828.0966 \nAs in the past we will meet in the upstairs Wrigley Room.

SUMMARY:October In-Person Meeting
DESCRIPTION:FIRE HAZARD CONSIDERATIONS WITH ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM IN TALL BUILDINGS \nThe implementation of energy storage systems (ESS) is on the rise. The use of ESS can smooth the imbalance between supply and demand in the power grid. Furthermore\, ESS can lead to better operational efficiency\, improved quality of power as well as cost reductions. This fairly new technology\, however\, comes with inherent fire and explosion risks\, the extent of which the industry is still working to understand. As the implementation of lithium-ion battery ESS has surged over the last 2-3 years\, there have also been more reported fires and explosions with these systems. If strict operational limits cannot be maintained\, lithium-ion batteries can undergo a condition called thermal runaway. The typical consequence is the release of potentially large quantities flammable and toxic gases\, which must be taken into account in the building safety concept. Solutions will be presented that can help building designers address this hazard. \nThis presentation provides an introduction into the fire and explosion hazards associated with lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (ESS) and the mitigation of those hazards associated with these systems. In particular\, the presentation will explain lithium-ion battery thermal runaway\, lay out a general safety approach\, and conceptualize mitigation measure options. In addition\, applicable codes and standard requirements will be presented to assure that architects\, engineers\, and project managers are informed about project impacts. Case studies and building applications are presented to deepen the understanding.
