SUMMARY:2023 September In-Person Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Design and Construction of Merdeka 118 Tower\nPresented by: Ahmad Abdelrazaq\, S.E. NAE\, MASCE\, Fctbuh\nManaging Director/Founding Partner: Rise Global llc \nMerdeka 118 is a large-scale mixed development that consist of a 118-storey mega-tall tower\, three high end residential towers and more than 130 000 m2 of high-end retail space. At the heart of this prestigious development\, is an iconic 118-storey diamond shape tower that is set to redefine Kuala Lumpur skyline with height of 679.9m tall to become the second tallest Tower in the world. The effective application of High-Performance Concrete up to C105 has significantly optimize the size of structural elements and improve the economics of the building by maximizing premium floor space. High Performance Concrete up to C105 has been applied to the mega column and core walls to optimize the size of the elements and improve the gravity and lateral load resisting capability of the elements. To ensure delivery of HPC to the highest standard\, extensive testing program and QA/QC program has been developed. The successful development and application of HPC in Merdeka 118 Tower has push the boundary of HPC utilization in Malaysia since the Petronas Twin Tower and will serve as beacon for efficient use of HPC in future tall buildings. \nFor this presentation we will meet on:\nSeptember 14\, 2023 \nWaterview \n350 W Wolff Point Plaza\n15th Floor\,\nChicago\, IL 60654 \nFor those that attended the June SalesForce Tower tour it is the location where we went for our after tour social time. This will be the last of the trial venues and promises a different experience.\nThe committee meeting will start at the usual time 5:00 pm in the Waterview Lounge with drinks and appetizers. At 6:00 pm we will adjourn to the LaSalle Room for our business meeting and technical presentation.

DESCRIPTION:The Transformation of Steel: A Primer in Sustainability\nPresented by: David Fennell\, American Institute of Steel Construction \nFor today’s design leaders\, choosing the right structural system doesn’t just include efficiency and cost\, but also has to consider an understanding and analysis of sustainability goals. We’ll focus on how modern domestic steel is produced\, what makes it the most sustainable structural material\, the supply chain and steel availability\, EPDs and sustainability commitments\, and how design choices (such as lateral systems\, cambering\, composite design\, and fire protection) can help to reduce environmental impacts. We’ll also provide information on tools\, ranging from mill-specific EPDs to design aids on hybrid design\, you can use to help you with design decisions. \nFor this presentation we will meet on:\nJuly 13\, 2023 \nMaggiano’s Little Italy Grand\n516 N. Clark St.\nChicago\, IL 60654\n312. 644.4284 \nOur meeting room will be the Amarone.\nThe meal will be family style w/the second course being: Fettuccine Alfredo\, Taylor Street Baked Ziti\, Chicken Parmesan\, Salmon – Lemon & Herb. \nLike the old days each attendee will receive two drink tickets. \nThe social hour will start at 5 pm.

SUMMARY:2023 February Virtual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:THE FUTURE IS NOW: ACHIEVING LOGISTICS AUTOMATION USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND ROBOTICS FOR IMPROVING FACILITY ENVIRONMENTS AND IMPACTING OPERATING COSTS \nPresented by:\nSandesh Jagdev\, Founding Partner at Logimaxx and\nDoug King\, Vice-President at Project Manager Advisors\, INC \nSimultaneous and powerful disruptors such as Pandemics\, Energy crisis\, Geopolitical issues\, Labor Challenges\, and Natural disasters are pushing many planning events including Healthcare facilities planning to a tipping point. In the age of Pandemics\, owners and planning teams are looking for innovative ways to improve patient and staff safety while reducing costs by improving operational efficiencies. These challenges can be mitigated with use of conveyance automation technologies as part of any building planning strategy. A key intention of this session is to discuss variety of decision factors such as feasibility\, practicality\, safety considerations\, space requirements\, & engineering considerations for various automation alternatives within different operating environments. \nAI and Robotics Beyond Healthcare?\nSandesh and Doug will also facilitate a portion of the presentation/conversation on usage of logistics automation technology in sectors other than the Healthcare Sector where it currently is predominant; for example\, the use of Logistics Automation is growing in the Hospitality Sector. The Presenters are also keen on leveraging the expertise of the assembled group at the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings to envision and brainstorm how this technology might embed into Tall and Super Tall Structures in the future. \nThis is going to be a virtual event!\nPlease register below to ensure the link is sent to you.\n(link to be distributed close to date)

SUMMARY:October In-Person Meeting
DESCRIPTION:FIRE HAZARD CONSIDERATIONS WITH ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM IN TALL BUILDINGS \nThe implementation of energy storage systems (ESS) is on the rise. The use of ESS can smooth the imbalance between supply and demand in the power grid. Furthermore\, ESS can lead to better operational efficiency\, improved quality of power as well as cost reductions. This fairly new technology\, however\, comes with inherent fire and explosion risks\, the extent of which the industry is still working to understand. As the implementation of lithium-ion battery ESS has surged over the last 2-3 years\, there have also been more reported fires and explosions with these systems. If strict operational limits cannot be maintained\, lithium-ion batteries can undergo a condition called thermal runaway. The typical consequence is the release of potentially large quantities flammable and toxic gases\, which must be taken into account in the building safety concept. Solutions will be presented that can help building designers address this hazard. \nThis presentation provides an introduction into the fire and explosion hazards associated with lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (ESS) and the mitigation of those hazards associated with these systems. In particular\, the presentation will explain lithium-ion battery thermal runaway\, lay out a general safety approach\, and conceptualize mitigation measure options. In addition\, applicable codes and standard requirements will be presented to assure that architects\, engineers\, and project managers are informed about project impacts. Case studies and building applications are presented to deepen the understanding.
